  As dramatist Juro Kara once wrote about the pedaling
  career of Kan Mikami: “Where on earth is there anyone
  who values the politeness of feet?” With her bleeding
  toenails trapped in red shoes, poetry school pupil Shoko
  Toshiyama might be the answer to that very question.

  What a curious sleight of hand, even considering its
  Japanese origins. Originally, this split double-CD
  bordering on private pressing brought together
  legendary blues-folk singer Kan Mikami with
  photographer and electronics tinkler Shoko Toshiyama,
  a lesser-known artist overtly kawaii in style, whose
  pictures are crafted like a cabinet of wonders adorned
  with pink ribbons. As a standalone release, “Red Shoes,
  Red Shoes, Full Moon in Las Vegas” still blends her
  colorful and experimental electronic music with some
  free jazz played by discreet musicians.
  Shoko Toshiyama, whose visual world is inspired by
  naughty photographer Nobuyoshi Araki, performs left-
  field electro-pop, a genre dear to many woman artists
  in the Land of the Rising Sun. In the form of short tracks,
  she carries the concept of visual collage into the realm
  of sounds. A few hints of acidulous J-pop, whimsical
  and funky even, like Cibo Matto slipping through the
  odd filter the likes of After Dinner or Haco, blend with
  samples, screeching saxophones and muddled guitarsfor
  a softer and sweeter take on Yoshihide Otomo’s
  works.Instrumental music, less abstract than Phew,
  with a DYI feeling like Ikue Mori’s kitchen works. It is
  not easy to find the right words to do this ultra-
  alternative - yet surprisingly-well produced - mixture of
  influences justice, as it falls for Yoshinori Yanagawa
  (who played the alto sax in Kaoru Abe’s biopic movie,
  Endless Waltz) in order to properly introduce this
  Japanese alternative music scene.
  Is it sugarcoated? Perhaps. However, as a whole, “Red Shoes,
  Red Shoes, Full Moon in Las Vegas” manages to
  round up three trends of the underground scene: folk,
  jazz, electronic music, and its little surprises must be
  tried without restraint. Consider it as a box of sweets.
